This weeks iPhone photo review: Temples, flowers, and some Engrish

This past week was a beautiful one in Japan. Spring is winding down and summer is starting. We have a few weeks until rainy season, so I’m making the most of it and taking tons of shots with my iPhone. Here are the best from this past week. Comments after each shot and click on any for a larger view.

Very blue flower

No idea what flower this is, but it looks nice, doesn’t it? I found this on one of my multi-hour walks getting lost in Okazaki.

house entrance

Houses cram as many flowers into the yard as they can. Often they spill out into the street. In America, neighbors would complain about this kind of thing. Here, everyone just enjoys it.

3-headed monk

A 3-headed monk outside of Ryukai-in Temple. I’ve never seen one of these before.

Temple gate

The gate to Ryukai-in. Ieyasu’s grandfather had an odd dream one night. He told a monk about it and the monk interpreted it to mean he would conquer all of Japan. He was so happy he built this temple. The monk was only off by a few generations.

monk gathering

Some lazy monks at the temple.

graveyard

Entrance to the temple grave yard.

Engrish message

Some Engrish for your amusement

Strange statue

Found this guy outside a sake store. I suppose it is a drunk traveler.

Lost Shrine

The entrance to a shrine I found hidden in the forest.

shrine entrance

Moving into the shrine. Spooky

fox messenger

Whew, it’s safe. Only kitsune (foxes) live there.

Meaning of "wow"

In case you forgot what “wow” meant and were wondering.

Jizo Group

Yes, yet another temple. The monks at this one were having a little tea party.

old store

A random old shop.

Sunset at Cherry Blossom festival

Today’s photo is a wide shot of the Oto river in Okazaki. This was taken towards the end of the blossoms, so many had already fallen. But you can still see a few on either side of the river. You can also make out the lights among them. Typically, most cities light up the blossoms at night. We call them yozakura when lit up this way. Some places go all out and use tons of lights, making the tree glow.

Sunset at cherry blossom festival

To say cherry blossoms are a big deal in Japan would be an under-statement. Every year between February and April, Japan turns white and pink. The white ones (soimeyoshino / 染井吉野 / そめいよしの) are the most popular. These bloom in late March/early April in Honshu (the main island of Japan) and line up nicely with the beginning of the school year. Because of this, many Japanese see the blossoms as the start of the new year.

The someiyoshino is actually a fairly recent variety, being developed in the mid to late 19th century. Despite this, someiyoshino have become so deeply associated with cherry blossoms that most movies and books of old Japan feature them, even though they didn’t exist at the times these works of fiction show!

As always, click on the photo for a larger version, and go to my flickr page to grab the full resolution version if you want it. Also, read more on someiyoshino and cherry blossoms in general from wikipedia.

flowers, buddha, and rice fields; this past week in iPhone photos

The iPhone camera is a pretty crappy deal. My 3G model only has 2mp of resolution, no focus, not very good dynamic range, and a bad lens. Despite this, iPhone photography is amazingly popular. Some pro photographers have even published books of nothing but iPhone photos. Part of the reason for this popularity is the screen. It’s amazing how much easier and more fun taking photos becomes when you have such a big (relatively speaking) screen in front of you to compose your photo on. The other reasons is apps. The iPhone has a huge selection of photo apps which do a great many things. At the basic level, they do photoshop type edits very quickly and easily.

Anyways, enough of that. Here are some of the better photos I took this past week with my iPhone. Descriptions follow each photo and be sure to click on them for a larger size.

Wisteria festival

Wisteria (fuji in Japanese.. sorry, still can’t get characters to show up on the website. Working on it.) are in full bloom right now. This is from the wisteria festival that’s going on this week.

Colorful riverside

Azalea (tsutsuji) are starting to bloom too. They are literally everywhere. I think just about every street in Okazaki is lined on both sizes with them.

Flowers

Not sure what this flower is, but it was nice.

Tilt-shift torii

Local shrine. I love the torii gate.

Overgrown fields

Rice fields near my apartment. They are overgrown with grass and weeds at the moment, but farmers will be clearing them off to plant rice soon.

Sakura Steps

Fallen petals from the cherry trees (sakura). Most of the blossoms are several weeks gone, but a few remain, mostly on the ground.

Hidden Jizo

O-jizo-sama, deep in meditation. These are from a small temple I just discovered the other day.

If you liked these, you can see more on my iPhone photos website or on flickr. I’ll try to do a “best of” post like this more often.

House yards.. er, jungles

Your photo of the week:

In the States, front yards (and often back ones too) usually consist of nothing more than a lawn. Maybe a tree or two, some flowers, but mostly it

This week in Japan April 23rd

Anyone interested in some Japanese news and links? I read through the news everyday, watch nhk, and visit a few links to other Japanese blogs. I thought I would start sharing a review of some of what I looked at over the past week.

  • A big story for English teachers in Japan is that Geos declared bankruptcy. This isn’t exactly a huge surprise; many of us have been expecting the major eikaiwas to start dropping ever since Nova went belly up. Read about it – >
  • Is the Ark of the Covenant buried in Japan? Some people think so! I’d rank this claim right up there with the one that says Jesus is buried in Japan. Read about it – >
  • Again this week the Japanese press (well, NHK anyways) has been obsessed with the US military base issue. This week Prime Minister Hatoyama admitted to being loopy. Read about it – >
  • Colbert is learning Japanese from a robot. Read about it here – >

There you go. Sorry so short. I’ll start saving what I read so I can post more stuff at the end of the week. Enjoy!

Photo of the week: Sakura along the Oto River

Let’s try something new here. I take lots of photos and occasionally post them on this blog. I want to post them more often, so I’m going to put myself on a schedule here. Every week I’ll post a photo of the week. Today being Tuesday, let’s make the day for the photo of the week post every Tuesday. If I can keep this up, I may increase it to a few times a week. Baby steps, eh?

This one below is taken from the Oto River. The river is lined with cherry trees. I’ve been told there are over 1000 trees. It doesn’t seem like nearly that many to me, but then again, there are a lot of them. When they bloom, the entire river is white and pink.

Sakura

Spring is here, and Spring in japan means sakura, or cherry blossoms. It would be an understatement to say sakura are popular. Most cites have at least one park with hundreds to thousands of sakura trees, and the favorite spring activity of most people is walking under the cherry blossoms, watching the cherry blossoms, picnicking under the cherry blossoms (hanami), and getting drunk under the cherry blossoms.

The sakura are so popular, tv stations will track their blooming across the country and give forcasts for best days for seeing them.

I’m writing this from my iPhone, so here are a number of sakura photos I have taken with the phone. Enjoy!

Tilt-shift Sumo

Do you like sumo? Of course you do. Sumo gets such a bad rap in the States. It is so much more than just “fat people belly slapping”. Sumo wrestlers are in excellent shape. They have some amazing skills, move like lightening, and are very strong.

I should do a post about sumo sometime. For now, watch the video below. Someone went out and took this amazing video of the recent tournment.

Scrap paper to toilet paper eco machine

I’ve talked before about the recycling culture here in Japan. This takes it to a new level. A new invention: A machine that shreds office papers and compacts them into rolls of toilet paper.

I’m speechless. One one hand, this is the kind of crazyness you would ony see in Japan. On the other, it’s actually a pretty damn good idea.
