Daily Photo: House in The Sky [186/365]

When I took this photo, I was just trying to capture the house and the cool clouds. However, upon processing it I was immediately reminded of Castle in The Sky, the fantastic Miyazaki film1. What do you think?

On A Walk

On A Walk

Another slice of life shot, this one a walk along one of the main streets, looking up towards the sky and a couple of houses behind a high wall. What great clouds, eh?

Streets of Takayama

Takayama has a few unique things about it, one of which is a historic area where the buildings are preserved in the Edo style. These narrow streets are lined with sake breweries and shops of all kinds. Most of the shops are all selling the same tourist-trap crap, but if you keep your eyes open, you can stumble across some cool things.

Streets of Takayama

Takayama is said to have the best carpenters in the country. Among other things, they are believed to have been called upon to aid in the construction of the imperial palace in Kyoto and temples around Nara and Kyoto.

The old carpentry style of Japan is pretty complicated: They didn’t use any nails or glue at all, instead cutting wood with various kinds of groves and joints so that it fit together perfectly. Many temples and older buildings around Japan were constructed in this style.

Walled Garden

Daily HDR Photo — Walled Garden

Looks like a nice garden back there. If only we were allowed to see it.

Walled Garden

About

Nice wall and gate anyways, and the garden looks pretty sweet from what we can see. This photo was taken in the downtown area where space is at a premium (well, even more than usual for Japan), but yet they still find enough room to grow plenty of green stuff.

I’ve taken a number of these by now. Go look at some other ones, both enclosed by walls and open.

Packed Front Garden

Daily HDR Photo — Packed Front Garden

Pretty busy front yard/garden on this house.

Packed Full Front Garden

About

No gate or walls blocking the view of this front garden, and you can see it is stuffed full with plants, shrubs, and flowers. Can you even see the path leading to the door? Look closely.

Shirakawago house

Daily HDR Photo — Shirakawago house

Today’s photo is a farmhouse in the small town of Shirakawago.

About

How would you like a rice field for your front yard? Nice breeze, but the mosquitos would be killer.

Go look at some of my other shots of Shirakawago.

House Garden and Hedge Wall

Daily HDR Photo — House Garden and Hedge Wall

Today’s photo is another entry for my Japanese Houses series. This one shows a somewhat traditional house hidden behind a hedge wall.

House Garden and Hedge Wall

About

The garden looks just as thick and full as we might expect. A bit more land than is common in newer houses. In fact, usually when these older houses are knocked down the plot is divided 3 or 4 ways and that many smaller new houses go up.

Cloud Blanket over Traditional House and HDR video

Daily HDR Photo — Cloud Blanket; Traditional House

Today’s photo is of some interesting clouds over a traditional Japanese home. I haven’t done a black and white in a while, so I went for that here.

Cloud Blanket over Traditional House

About

The house you see the top of here is to date the only traditional home I’ve seen built from the ground up. Most modern houses are constructed very cheaply; they are shipped out with everything precut and go up in a few weeks to a month. I watch these being built all the time. Last I checked, they are only rated to last about 20 years. By contrast, this traditional house took a full year of daily work to finish. I’m going to assume it will last a little longer. (I think it’s also a safe guess that it cost a lot more)

Video

This is a slideshow I made with some of my more popular photos. It is the first slideshow I’ve made, but I think it turned out pretty good.

I encoded it in 720p, which is considered HD. I’d recommend letting it load (sometimes YouTube loads fast, sometimes slow… Just depends on how busy their servers are at any given moment, I guess. Hope for the best!) and watching it that way. Any lower and it won’t look so hot.

What do you think? Like I said, this is my first real experience making one, so if you have any hints or suggestions please let me know.
