Daily HDR Photo — Orange Sky — Busy Street

Today’s shot is a beautiful sunset over a busy street. Well, not that busy at the moment. Usually it is

(Note: There is an email link embedded within this post, please visit this post to email it.)

I don’t know what weather conditions make for these skys that go a rich orange with the setting sun. I suppose a certain level of water in the air to reflects the light just so. Whatever it is, I think these are my favorite kind of sunsets. I was lucky enough to be near this bridge when the sky started to turn, so I quickly set up and took this shot.

In addition to the wonderful sky, you can really get a sense of the chaos of wires present in Japan with this shot. Ah, wires…

Daily HDR Photo — Rice Field Sunset

Today’s photo is a nice sunset taken from some rice fields. The rice is only a few weeks planted, so still plenty of water visible in the paddies to give us a nice reflection.

(Note: There is an email link embedded within this post, please visit this post to email it.)

Rice has always been the most common crop in Japan. The volcanic activity of the island makes the soil very acidic which makes growing rice ideal.

These days, however, the popularity and consumption of rice is decreasing rapidly as more and more people turn to bread and other Western foods. Not only that, but the rice fields themselves are disappearing. Young people don’t want to be farmers, so no one is replacing the aging ones. No one is quite sure what is to come of this situation.

If you look closely, you can see some school kids hanging out in the photo. I suppose a patch of rice fields is as good a place as any to avoid adults and get some privacy.

What do you think? Let me know in the comments.

Remember, I offer the full-size version of this. Zoom in and let it fill your screen. I find HDR works best when the photo is too big for you to take completely in, so your eyes have to wander around. Try it.

Today’s photo is a good view of a traditional Japanese House. It’s surrounded by a beautiful, thick garden. A huge wooden gate leads in.

You actually can’t really see the house, right? Just a bit of the top. This is relatively common for older houses. Newer ones too if they can afford the ever-increasing land prices for that extra space.

Japanese gardens are amazing, and this one appears to be no exception.

The gates to homes come in a variety of styles. On the low end, you can pick up a simple black metal swing gate. That’s the most common kind. Then there’s the style you see above. Expensive, but beautiful.

What do you think? Let me know in the comments.
