The Thinker

The Thinker

A meerkat pondering… whatever it is that meerkats ponder. What do you suppose he’s thinking about? How many years till he’s out of the joint, maybe.

Daily Photo: Liftoff in...5...4...3...2... [123/365]

These guys are quick, darting around like hummingbirds. I’ve never seen any sitting still for more than a moment or two. I caught this one just as he was about to take off to the next branch. Continue Reading →

Daily Photo: Experimental Ducks [113/365]

Actually they are regular mallard ducks (真鴨/マガモ)and there is little experimental about them. I think. I don’t know what secrets they are keeping. At any rate, “experimental” refers more to the processing for this photo, but more on that later. Continue Reading →

Daily Photo: Mejiro Are Messy Eaters [91/365]

A close-up shot of a Mejiro (Japanese White-Eye) as he eats the nectar from the kawazuzakura cherry blossoms. What a messy eater — you can see it all over his mouth. Continue Reading →

Daily Photo: Inspecting the Troops [9/365]

Continuing my experimental steps into some bird photography, here’s an interesting scene I saw the other day. As last time, I don’t know what birds these are. If you do, please leave a comment. I need to get a bird guide book. Anyway, it seems to me like the bigger fella with the long legs is inspecting the smaller ones like an army general. He was marching back and forth while all the rest just stayed put. It was interesting to watch.

Check out other photos of birds.

This shot is only from one exposure, so it is not really an HDR image. It is, however, tone-mapped to give it a similar look, so we typically call these images pseudo-HDR.

Daily Photo: Huge Koi! Good Luck for 2011!

There are so many different kinds of Koi, it’s hard to keep track for a non-fish guy like myself. This one photoed below is called a Platinum Ogon (プラチナ黄金)1 and is one of the bigger ones I’ve seen. Look how huge he is!

I wonder if it is good luck to find such a huge fish on New Years. I’m going to assume it is2. So I’m already off to a great 2011!! やった!

Big Koi

By the way… Happy New Year!!! If you missed my post yesterday—go read it. It’s all about ringing the temple bell on New Years.

  1. Maybe. He might be a Hikari. If you know for sure, please let me know.
  2. And I’m going to ignore you if you tell me otherwise. No offense — just, y’know, as they say: ignorance is bliss ;)

The Birds

I’m not a fan of pigeonholing people into specific categories, but at the same time, I suppose it is accurate enough to label me as a landscape photographer. I see a lot of beauty in landscapes and so do primarily shoot that way, but I also experiment with all kinds of shots. I’m always trying new things with my photography. In my opinion, the only way to grow and improve is to constantly stretch outside of our comfort zones. Continue Reading →

Feed the Birds

These pigeons that hang out near the river are incredibly spoiled. Every time I visit the area, some one is feeding them something. There are a great many — much more than you see in this photo — and they are always fighting over the food people throw them. Maybe that is why so many people feed them — to watch them fight it out.

Once again, I’m reminded of the Goodfeathers.

The city conveniently has a vending machine near the river just for bird food. However, it does costs more than two pence a bag.

See more pigeons.

Injured Swan

I couldn’t see anything wrong with her leg, but she kept it up like that the entire time I was watching. I’m far from an expert, though, and for all I know that might be normal behavior for a swan. At any rate, this is one of two (I think) swans that are always floating up and down the Oto River. I’ve never seen more than two at the same time, anyway. They are both tagged on the foot. Come to think of it, maybe that is what is wrong with her foot — it hurts from the tag.

Not sure if this is the same one I captured here.
