Daily Photo: Rainy Season Cloudy Sunset [161/365]

Rainy Season might be overcast, grey, ugly, and wet most of the time, but when the rain stops and the clouds start to break at the right time, it gives an awesome affect in the sky. Like so… Continue Reading →

Daily Photo: Condo Sunset [145/365]

A nice sunset and a Japanese condo. (The same condo pictured here) What do these things have in common? Not much, but I bet it’s a great view from one of those top floors.

Cloudy Sunset

A nice sunset, one that may signal the end of times, and a few words about a cool new service I’ve recently discovered.

Daily Photo: Church on the River [47/365]

It’s not a real church. Still, the effect here is nice, sitting along the river here with the light of the setting sun poking through the clouds. This is very close to where I took this shot, only from the opposite direction.

Daily Photo: Moody Sunset [38/365]

A few days ago I posted a photo of the Oto River. Here is a different location along the same river, and towards evening as the sun was dropping. Instead of textures, this time I added some moody effects. What do you think?

Fire Clouds

Fire Clouds

I haven’t posted any sunset photos for a while, so here’s one I kind of liked. I love how the light caught that cloud perfectly to make it look like it’s on fire. It’s almost like the sun itself is hidden behind those clouds.

River Sunset

It’s been a few weeks since I posted a sunset photo, so here you go. This is the Oto River. If you follow it around that bend, you’ll get to the castle. Nice place for walks and such. Around lunch time those banks on either side fill up with businessmen seeking some sort of break from the stress of work.

Facebook Page

As I mentioned yesterday, I’ve gone and set up a Facebook page for this website. I know a lot of people enjoy Facebook, and I’ve gotten more than a few requests to do it. I hope it helps make it easier for you guys to find my photos.

As I write this, only 8 likes? C’mon, we can do better than that! Tell your friends, tell your family, tell your old school teachers who you have befriended on Facebook for unknown reasons. You can use the new sidebar widget to get there (visible on the main blog page), or this link.

Waiting for the Sunset & A Video

Probably one of the best uses of HDR photography — certainly the most common — is shooting sunsets. The range of light during the time is tremendous and HDR catches it well. But we’ll get to that in a second. First, a word on a video I made.

Japan in HDR: The Movie

A while ago I put together a slideshow video featuring many of my photos. Have you seen it? I’ll embed it below. I bring this up because I’m currently working on another one. It’s taking a little bit of time because I don’t want to just throw photos in Aperture and use whatever it generates. Hopefully it will be ready within the next few days. Although, now that I think of it, I may wait to release it until next week and give the newsletter members first look.

Not a member? It’s free to sign up — why not go take a look at the newsletter page and see what you think.

(You can download that video here if you want, by the way. Or favorite it on youtube.)

Daily Japan HDR — Waiting for the Sunset

As I was saying above, HDR is very useful for taking photos of sunsets. And if you are a regular visitor to this website, you know I take a lot of them. What you may not realize is that taking the sunset often involves some waiting. The actual sunset that we want to photo is very short, only a few minutes. It’s best to be at the location where you want to shoot well in advance.

That’s not to say this waiting is all bad. As you can see in the photo below, the sky can do some pretty interesting things as the sun drops. The Golden Hour was just beginning as I set up for this. Sunset was about 20 minutes away, so I got a nice show of the changing sky.

Different day, but here is what it looks like a few minutes later from the same location. Amazing how fast the sky changes.

Sunset Before the Harvest & a Spider Lily

Taken a few weeks ago a few days before the harvest. The rice was just about ready to fall off itself. The sunset was lighting up the sky nicely, and I even found a small Red Spider Lily to include in the shot.

Sunset Before the Harvest & a Spider Lily

I’ll give more info about Spider Lilies in a future post. For now, they are called higanbana in Japanese and mark the fall equinox for the Japanese. They are poisonous for some animals like mice and so used to be planted around rice patties and other areas to discourage these pests. Nice looking flower, isn’t it?

If you don’t want to wait on me in order to learn more, my buddy Len recently talked about them a bit on his blog. Go check it out.
