Here is a look at a Nagoya back alley. This is from Sakae, which I suppose you might compare to Shibuya. I was waking from here to my favorite area, Osu, and happened to spot this interesting alley. A few adult businesses, and look — a teddy bear stuck to the side of that building. Not something I expected to see…

Getting Around during Rainy Season
Getting around during Rainy Season is always a bit of a pain. The wind is often strong enough that an umbrella is only going to keep your upper half dry — or only little more than your face if you are trying to manage one while riding a bicycle. There are rain suits, but those are a bit of a pain to get out of and to store when you get to your destination.

House Forest on the Corner
As I’ve mentioned in the past, most houses here in Japan don’t come with a heck of a lot of land other than what the house is built on. Many come with none. The lucky few[^1] always seem to cram as much into the free space as possible. Traditional Japanese gardens are already often considerably fuller than their Western counterparts, but these houses take it to a whole other level. More like forests than gardens.

Daily Photo: Giant Torii in Road [52/365]
February 21, 2011
This is the entrance to Iga Hachimangu, which I’ve posted several photos of. Go look at all of them. Pretty big torii gate, huh? Yeah, it’s a parking lot right in front of and under the torii. Some religious people may object and say it is insulting to use this entrance to a holy place as a parking lot, but it reflects a reality of modern Japan: there just isn’t very much land, so they use all the space available to pack in as much as they can.

Lots of hills and mountains in the Okazaki area. I suppose this is rough on cars, but it is even rougher on bicyclists like myself. This one here was just a bit too steep for me, so I had to jump off and walk it up. It wasn’t exactly easy walking up a street this steep either!
Daily Photo: Budget Cuts [40/365]

Times are tough and the city is cutting back. Here is a bus stop in Okazaki. Ok, joking aside, let’s not blame the city too much for this one. I think they failed to install seats at this particular bus stop and so someone supplied their own rather poor substitute. Still, some hopeful politician could probably use this to his advantage.

Out of the Tunnel
Coming out from the under-street walking pass. As we saw before, you can see the ramp in the middle of the steps for bicycles. The mirror at the end is kind of interesting. You wouldn’t think it’d be necessary here, but I suppose maybe in the past there have been some bicycle collisions. People do like to ride down the ramps instead of getting off and walking the bike down, and teenage boys love to try and power ride their way up.

Daily Photo: Sunset Under the Bridge [26/365]
Here is a great example of the power of good light. The photo below is a relatively boring location and super boring subject. The bottom of an overpass… Hold me back. But yet, add in the light from a sinking sun and suddenly it becomes a lot more interesting. To me anyways. Hopefully to you too.

Daily Photo: Train Tracks and Light [19/365]
Here is a nice scene for you. I took this around 3 in the afternoon, a time of day that usually gives pretty good light that isn’t too harsh. The sun is hitting those buildings perfectly there and is giving this entire area a nice golden cast.
I hadn’t planned this shot, but observed where the light was hitting best and followed it there. Pro photographer Rick Sammon often says, “Follow the Light”. By taking that phrase very literally I was able to get this great shot.
