I never experienced any culture shock when I came to Japan. Honestly, things just aren’t that different. But one thing that always jumps out at me is yards to houses. In the midwest USA (or at least Indiana where I’m from), yards are open. Some people put up fences in their front yard, but most don’t, so everything is visible to the public.

But in Japan the yard is often surrounded by a stone wall or thick hedge keeping the yard at least semi-private. Visually it’s a lot different from what I’m used to. Often these walls have little “windows” like this spaced every so often. It’s a pleasant touch. There are a handful of different designs I see. I kind of liked this one.

This is Higanbana (彼岸花), also known as a Spider Lily, or (as I like to call it) death flower. The bloom around the autumn equinox. In addition to equinox, higan also refers to the other shore of the Sanzu River. The Sanzu River is the Japanese version of the River Styx, or in other words the afterlife. They grow on the opposite shore and guide spirits into the next life. It’s also said when two people part for the final time, higanbana will bloom in their path as they depart from one another.

A creepy flower, eh? They are often planted along rice fields to keep pests away. The bulb of these flowers is poisonous, so field mice and other creatures stay away.

I took tons of photos of them today. Here’s one. I didn’t do much to process this, just gave it a strong S curve to increase the contrast and adjusted the white balance a bit.
