I never experienced any culture shock when I came to Japan. Honestly, things just aren’t that different. But one thing that always jumps out at me is yards to houses. In the midwest USA (or at least Indiana where I’m from), yards are open. Some people put up fences in their front yard, but most don’t, so everything is visible to the public.

Higanbana

This is Higanbana (彼岸花), also known as a Spider Lily, or (as I like to call it) death flower. The bloom around the autumn equinox. In addition to equinox, higan also refers to the other shore of the Sanzu River. The Sanzu River is the Japanese version of the River Styx, or in other words the afterlife. They grow on the opposite shore and guide spirits into the next life. It’s also said when two people part for the final time, higanbana will bloom in their path as they depart from one another.

Another black and white for you guys. This is a look at a typical bicycle parking lot around here. Due to Toyota, Aichi is a bit more car-centric than other prefectures (or so I hear), but a lot of folks still get around solely by bicycle, so these parking lots get pretty packed.
