Daily HDR Photo — The Ootorii
Today’s photo is a view of the famous Ootorii (Oh-toh-ree), one of the symbols of Japan.
About
The tide was nearly completely out for most of the day when I visited. It doesn’t look quite as nice as when the tide is in and it seems to be floating, but there is one advantage of this time of day: It is said to be good luck if you touch the torii and stick some coins in the cracks. As you might imagine, people are very eager to do both.
For the record, I touched it but I didn’t stick any coins in. No one told me about that part of the myth until I returned from my trip. Oh well, I didn’t want good luck anyway.

I’m pretty sure the tide was out on my first visit to Miyajima, but I didn’t know about the good luck myth at all. Oh well, maybe next time!
On another note, it’s amazing what difference a clear day makes. Last time I visited Miyajima you couldn’t see across to the mainland at all. It was cool seeing the shrine emerge from the mist on the ferry ride over though.
