Ukiyoe Museum in Kyoto

Daily HDR Photo — Ukiyoe Museum

Today’s photo is an interesting find in Kyoto. A small ukiyoe (oo-key-yo-eh) museum in the middle of a random neighborhood with some interesting open hours.

Wait — what does that sign say?

Ukiyoe Museum Sign

Nice!

About

Ukiyoe is a kind of woodblock paintings. They are pretty famous — in fact, any image of traditional Japanese art you have in your head is more than likely an ukiyoe image. Some of the more well known ones include The Great Wave (it’s one of the default osx desktop wallpapers, mac users) and Red Fuji.

After Japan opened to the West in 1868, Ukiyoe became a major inspiration to the Impressionists painters (such as Monet). I often say that HDR is a kind of Impressionism, so you might say ukiyoe was an ancestor of HDR in a way.

Unfortunately, no one was here when I visited. I guess he had had enough that day — or was sleeping.

Yeah, I know. I would have loved to see inside!! Too bad I didn’t think to snap a shot with my iPhone and save the gps data. I don’t know if I can find it again.

Isn’t it cool? When I start my own business, I’m using that sign!

I know, I wish I had recorded the address. This trip was only months before I got my first iPhone… I could have used the gps. It was in the general area of ken’ninji, if you want to look around for it.

The sign was translated into English by my British husband in 2003 when we went to Kyoto and got talking to the owner of this museum by chance! I even used to live right opposite when I was small but never knew this place was a museum!!
