Japanese Stone Lanterns

Japanese Stone Lanterns

Today’s shot is a line of Japanese stone lanterns from a small neighborhood shrine, all lined up under the ginkgo trees in autumn.

Japanese stone lanterns, called tōrō1 are nearly everywhere. Maybe more common than Stone Jizos, but I haven’t checked on that ;) . They originally were used only in Buddhist temples, but worked their way into Shinto and now are common in private gardens for decorative use. The old tea masters made them popular.

There are a great many types of tōrō. This one is the kasuga type, which is most common at temples and shrines.

I took this at a neighborhood shrine in the small town of Tsushima, near Nagoya. It was a brilliant fall day. This shrine had several ginkgo trees, and ginkgo tree leaves turn a rich golden color in fall. With the sun bouncing off them, it was almost too bright to look at them directly! You can catch a glimpse of one in the corner there.

What do you think? Let me know in the comments.

I have no idea how this kind picture could be taken… When I stare at it, it even makes me dizzy.… @_@;; Working on making Newsletter? wow.… I’m interested in it. Ganbatte kudasai.
