Daily HDR Photo — Gang of Monks
Today’s photo is a vicious looking gang of monks.
No, wait, it’s a group of Jizo! You remember Jizo, don’t you? He’s the Buddhism Saint who protects children in this life and the next.
Most of these monks appear quite serious in their meditations, except for the guy I focused on in the middle with the purple bib and bit of an overweight face. Maybe it’s just how his bib is blown at the moment, or maybe it is that someone didn’t put his cap on straight, but he looks fast asleep to me. Must be some deep meditation.

Thank you for reading. If you enjoyed the post, please share it with your buddies on the web. A few options below. Thank you so much :)

Today picture of a line-up of Jizo status is cute. The middle one with a purple bib even looks to be in a bad mood. The facial expression of each Jizo-san looks different. I wonder why the fifth one from the front is a little bigger than the others. He looks like a leader of this Jizo group. I think the bibs or hats are handmade by local residences. (but the design/color combination of bibs are cute and Hade (派手)… You can find them from afar.
They are very nice bibs! These are upscale Jizo if I ever saw any…

Why bibs, anyway? I’ve seen this stuff before (dressing the statues), but… why bibs?
I don’t know exactly, but I’d guess Bibs just are the easiest baby clothes to put on. Since Jizo protects kids in the afterlife, grieving parents would put their baby’s clothes on the statues. Kind of an offering/prayer or something like that. Some Jizo statues are bigger than most baby clothes, but bibs nearly always fit.
