Japanese Bridges

Traditional Japanese bridges are a visual treat.

Bridge to...

The way they arch up, hiding what is on the other side. Very mysterious. What’s over there??

Do you know what is the purpose of why Taiko-bashi was built like this? What is the point to build them this way? It is too steep to walk on there. It is almost impossible to cross over on high heels to the other side.

Nope, I have no idea. I know why they are called “taiko” — because together with the refection, it looks like a drum — but no idea why they were made that way. Do you know? To connect heaven and earth maybe? I’m guessing it is related to shinto.

This one at the castle park is not nearly as steep as some and is the main way to get to the castle so it gets a lot of foot traffic.
