That's one mean looking dragon!

Dragon guarding water

This is a Chozuya, it is the place in a Shinto shrine where you are suppose to perform temizu, or in other words to wash your hands, rinse your mouth, and wash the ladle itself. It is a way to purify yourself before praying at the shrine. Shinto is very big on keeping everything clean.

Trucks in Japan

Small truck

So here is an odd one, right? Nothing like the huge pickups we have in the States. This is the only size of truck I’ve seen here. It’s comparable in size to the smaller trucks we have, but even tinier. I would guess they are designed so small so they can drive around in or near the rice fields.

Cloudy and blue

Cloudy and blue

This summer has been pretty nasty. Rainy season seemed to end at the beginning of July, but after only a few days of sun, the rain returned and has been with us nearly everyday since! Finally this week it began to clear up a little and the sun came out. Now one side of things is that an already hot summer has suddenly become even hotter since in addition to the heat and humidity, the sun is now shining on us. The other side is that now we are getting some wonderful skies. I took this photo in the early afternoon. As you can see the sky was filled with these awesome puffy clouds, so the light wasn’t as harsh as it might otherwise have been. The result was as you see. I’m really happy at how well it turned out. [1. Tho it does remind me of the limits of my 18 – 55 kit lens…]

Sun sets over the Oto river

Sun sets over the Otogawa

Took this last night while walking along the Oto river. As the sun started to go down, the clouds opened up. I took my camera out and wouldn’t you know it – while I was putting the lens on, the hole started to disappear. I got lucky and caught this shot just before it completely disappeared behind all the clouds.

If you look carefully, you can see Okazaki castle in the background!

Moss covered shrine

Moss covered shrine

This isn’t the main shrine, but I believe a secondary one on the same grounds. I forget the name, but it is the main shrine in Shirakawa-go, a very cool village that everyone should go to at least once.

Rice Field and foot bridges

Rice Field and foot bridges

In the States it’s not all that common to find farms within city limits, at least not full size farms (at least not that I’m aware of), but here it’s common enough to find small sections of farm land enclosed by the city. I understand this normally comes about from stubborn farmers who refuse to sell their land even as the city springs up around them. I’m told that even in Tokyo you can find little pockets of farm land.
